Synopsis

The woodworker Kunrad, suspected by his neighbours of dark powers, is smitten with the mayor's daughter Diemut and kisses her before the whole town at the Fire Festival. Humiliated, her father sends her indoors, but Diemut has already begun plotting her revenge on Kunrad.

The only version. The libretto, by Ernst von Wolzogen, is drawn from a Flemish legend, "The Quenched Fires of Audenarde", printed in Johann Wilhelm Wolf's Sagas of the Netherlands.
