Richard Strauss

Richard Strauss was one of the last great figures of German Romanticism, first making his name with vivid orchestral tone poems (Don Juan, Till Eulenspiegel and Also sprach Zarathustra) before turning to opera. Salome and Elektra, both harmonically daring and psychologically extreme, gave way to a gentler, more lyrical idiom with Der Rosenkavalier (1911), the second of six he wrote with the librettist Hugo von Hofmannsthal. He continued composing into his eighties; his final works, the Four Last Songs among them, are often read as a farewell. His compromised position within Nazi Germany remains a controversial chapter of his career.
