The Quenched Fires of Audenarde

legend

A Flemish legend printed in Johann Wilhelm Wolf's Niederländische Sagen (1843). Ernst von Wolzogen's libretto keeps the legend's premise, a town's fires magically extinguished and only rekindled at a wronged man's word, but makes Kunrad the pupil of the sorcerer Reichhart, a thinly veiled Richard Wagner.
