Gavriil Morskoy

Gavriil Morskoy was a Russian lyric-dramatic tenor with a strong voice of wide range, born Yanchevetsky and known by his stage name. He studied at the St Petersburg Conservatory from 1882 to 1889 under Camillo Everardi, Stanislav Gabel and Osip Paleček, then sang in Odessa, Kiev, Kharkov and Tiflis before joining the Mariinsky Theatre in 1895, where he shared the leading tenor roles with Ivan Ershov and Nikolai Figner for eleven years. He created Grigory in Rimsky-Korsakov's edition of Boris Godunov in 1896. He taught from 1907 and helped found the Petrograd People's Conservatory.
