Aleksandr Kabanov

Aleksandr Kabanov was a Russian tenor who sang Prince Shuisky at the 1928 Leningrad premiere of the original 1869 Boris Godunov. He left a Saratov trade school for the St Petersburg Conservatory, graduating in 1916, and after a spell with the Theatre of Musical Drama joined the Mariinsky company, where the critics singled out his acting and he sang for the rest of his life. Most of his premieres were in Soviet opera, the police inspector in Shostakovich's The Nose among them, and he sang the Singer in the first Soviet Der Rosenkavalier. He disappeared during the siege of Leningrad.
