Hans Erwin Hey

Hans Erwin Hey, who performed as Hans Erwin, was a German bass, the son of the vocal pedagogue Julius Hey, under whom he trained alongside study at the Munich Academy of Music. He held engagements at Trier, Riga and Prague before joining the Dresden Court Opera in 1905, where he created the Second Soldier in the premiere of Strauss's Salome that year. He moved to Wiesbaden in 1908, guested at Covent Garden as Beckmesser in 1907 and Klingsor in 1914, and later sang in Berlin, Copenhagen and Vienna. From 1910 he also taught voice, reworking his father's manual Der kleine Hey, and held professorships in Berlin, Ankara and Vienna, where he died in 1943.
