Riza Eibenschütz

Riza Eibenschütz was a Hungarian contralto who studied at the Vienna Conservatory of the Gesellschaft der Musikfreunde under Josef Gänsbacher and Marianne Brandt, and began her career in Leipzig in the early 1890s. She toured North America with the Damrosch Opera Company between 1897 and 1899 and joined the Dresden Court Opera in 1902, where she created the Page of Herodias in the premiere of Salome in 1905, the Overseer in the premiere of Elektra in 1909, and Sophie's duenna in the premiere of Der Rosenkavalier in 1911. Though trained as a mezzo-soprano, her range extended to soprano roles including Brünnhilde and Senta. She retired around 1913, married the conductor Oskar Malata, and later taught singing in Perchtoldsdorf, near Vienna.
