Teatro Grande

Brescia, Italy · opened 1810

A theatre has stood on the site since about 1664, built by the Accademia degli Erranti on ground the Republic of Venice granted it in 1643. The present horseshoe auditorium is Luigi Canonica's, inaugurated in 1810, and the name descends from an earlier one honouring Napoleon. The revised Madama Butterfly was given here on 28 May 1904, three months after the failure at the Teatro alla Scala, and succeeded.
