Built for Count Francesco Dal Verme on the site of the Politeama Ciniselli and opened on 14 September 1872 with Les Huguenots, it was for thirty years one of the busiest opera houses in Italy. Le villi was first given here in 1884 and revised for this house again in 1889; Leoncavallo's Pagliacci followed in 1892. A cinema by the 1930s, it was badly damaged by bombing in the Second World War, and the auditorium behind the old walls dates from a rebuilding finished in 2001. It no longer stages opera.
