Metropolitan Opera House (39th Street)

also Old Metropolitan Opera House, Old Met

New York, United States · 1883–1966

The Metropolitan Opera's first house, filling the block between West 39th and West 40th Streets on Broadway, opened on 22 October 1883 and nicknamed the Yellow Brick Brewery for the look of its outside. Gutted by fire in 1892 and rebuilt on its old lines, its interior was redesigned in 1903. La fanciulla del West was first given here in 1910 and the three operas of Il trittico in 1918. The company left in April 1966 for Lincoln Center and the building was pulled down the next year.
