Written by Scribe and Duveyrier in 1839 for Donizetti, who left the opera unfinished; it reached the stage only in 1882, completed by Matteo Salvi. In 1855 the libretto was transferred to Verdi's Les vêpres siciliennes, its action moved from the Spanish occupation of Flanders in 1573 to the French occupation of Sicily in 1282.
