Paolo Wulman
Birthplace: Rome, Papal States
An Italian bass whose career took him across Italy, Lisbon and South America. Born in Rome, where he studied with Ottavio Bartolini, he sang Lotario in Mignon at Parma in 1884 and went on to Silva, Alvise, Mefistofele and Don Basilio in Rome, Lisbon, Buenos Aires, Montevideo and Santiago de Chile. On 17 February 1904 he created Lo zio Bonzo in the first Madama Butterfly at La Scala, and later sang the part in New York. Between 1916 and 1918 he acted in ten films. He taught after leaving the stage, and died leaving his family in poverty.
