Tieste Wilmant
Birthplace: Lodi, Lombardy
An Italian baritone, the first Marcello. From Lodi, he made his debut at Chiari in 1878 and in the 1880s sang Barnaba, Telramund and Rossini's Figaro in Turin, Bologna and Nice. He first appeared at La Scala in the 1893-94 season, as Lescaut in Manon Lescaut, and on 1 February 1896 created Marcello in La bohème at the Teatro Regio in Turin, taking the part to Florence, Brescia and Bologna. At La Scala he was later Alberich in Siegfried, and Iago, which he sang there in 1899 and recorded, became the role of his later career. He died in Lodi.
