Margarete Teschemacher

Margarete Teschemacher was a German soprano who studied and made her stage debut in Cologne in 1923, as Ruth in Schreker's Die toten Augen, following it the next year with her breakthrough as Micaëla. Engagements at Aachen, Dortmund, Mannheim and Stuttgart followed, and she sang Pamina and Elsa at Covent Garden in 1931 and Arabella, Senta, Sieglinde and Marenka at the Teatro Colón in 1934, before moving to the Dresden Staatsoper in 1935, where she created the title role in Strauss's Daphne in 1938. Her repertory also included Jenůfa, Minnie and Kundry, and her warm lyric-dramatic voice was considered among the finest of its kind, especially during her Dresden years.
