Alfredo Tedeschi

An Italian tenor, born Alfio Tedesco at San Fratello in Sicily, who moved from lyric leads to comprimario parts over a career of nearly fifty years. He made his debut in 1902 as Elvino in La sonnambula at Asti, and in 1915 sang at the Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires beside Galli-Curci and Titta Ruffo. In 1922 he created Edmondo in the final version of Manon Lescaut at La Scala. From 1926 to 1935 he gave 363 performances at the Metropolitan Opera, and in 1948 he was back at the Colón. He died at Verdi's Casa di Riposo in Milan.
