Marie Sundelius

Birthplace: Karlstad, Sweden
A Swedish-American soprano, born Marie Sundborg in Karlstad. She emigrated with her parents to Boston in 1897, studied singing from 1902 and made her concert debut there in 1910 under Karl Muck. She joined the Metropolitan Opera in 1916, first appearing on 25 November in Iphigénie en Tauride, and sang Micaela there opposite Caruso and Farrar; at the first Il trittico in 1918 she created the Zelatrice in Suor Angelica and La Ciesca in Gianni Schicchi. Her concert tours made Swedish folk songs popular, and from 1932 she taught at the New England Conservatory. Coretta Scott King was among her pupils.
