Temistocle Solera
Birthplace: Ferrara, Papal States
Temistocle Solera was an Italian librettist and composer whose texts for Nabucco, I Lombardi alla prima crociata, Giovanna d'Arco and Attila gave the young Verdi some of his most stirring patriotic situations. Schooled in Vienna while his father was in the Spielberg prison, he once ran away to a circus. His first operatic task was to revise Piazza's libretto of Oberto for Verdi. He left Attila for Piave to finish, following his wife, the soprano Teresa Rosmina, to Madrid. Verdi never worked with him again, but in 1861 gave anonymously to a fund to help him. He died in poverty.
