Carl Schlegel

A German baritone who spent thirteen seasons at the Metropolitan Opera, much of it in Wagner. Born in Nuremberg, he won a scholarship to the Royal Conservatory in Munich through Cosima Wagner, who had heard him sing, and studied there with teachers including Richard Strauss. He came to the United States in 1898 and joined the Met in 1913, singing Kothner, Gunther, Kurwenal, Biterolf and Donner as well as Peter in Hänsel und Gretel, and in 1918 created Guccio in Gianni Schicchi. He later sang at St Patrick's Cathedral and taught at the New York College of Music.
