Tito Schipa
also Raffaele Attilio Amedeo Schipa
Birthplace: Lecce, Kingdom of Italy
An Italian tenor, the outstanding tenore di grazia of his generation. He studied at Lecce with Alceste Gerunda and then in Milan, made his debut at Vercelli in La traviata and reached La Scala by 1915. He created Ruggero in La rondine at Monte Carlo in 1917, then sang with the Chicago Opera from 1919 to 1932 and at the Metropolitan Opera in the following seasons. His repertory settled on the lighter Italian roles and a French group including Werther and Manon, sung with a clarity of diction his many recordings preserve. He left the stage in 1958 to teach.
