Giorgio Ronconi

1810–1890 · Italian · baritone

Birthplace: Milan, Kingdom of Italy (Napoleonic)

Giorgio Ronconi was an Italian baritone who created the title role of Verdi's Nabucco at La Scala in 1842. A pupil of his father, the tenor Domenico Ronconi, he made his debut at Pavia in 1831, and created roles in seven Donizetti premieres, including the title role of Torquato Tasso and Chevreuse in Maria di Rohan. He sang at Covent Garden most seasons from 1847 to 1866 and was the first London Rigoletto, in 1853. His voice was neither beautiful nor always true, but its power at the top and his acting made him a model for the Verdi baritone.
