Franz Theo Reuter, born Franz Theo Musil, was an Austrian bass-baritone who studied musicology in Vienna under Guido Adler and Egon Wellesz before training as a singer with Theo Lierhammer and the composer Franz Schmidt. He held engagements at Augsburg, Munich and Trier through the 1920s, then returned to Vienna as Lierhammer's assistant, before joining the Munich State Opera ensemble in 1933, where he created the Preacher in the premiere of Strauss's Friedenstag in 1938 and a role in the premiere of Carl Orff's Der Mond the following year. From 1946 he also taught at the Munich Music Academy.
