Albert Reiss
Birthplace: Berlin, Kingdom of Prussia
A German tenor, one of the Metropolitan Opera's most durable character singers. He studied in Berlin with Wilhelm Vilmar and later with Benno Stolzenberg and Julius Lieban, and made his debut at Königsberg in 1897. Engaged by the Met in 1901, he sang there every season until 1919, giving over a thousand performances and becoming known above all for David in Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg and Mime in the Ring. He created Nick in La fanciulla del West and sang Valzacchi in the first American Der Rosenkavalier. He returned to Berlin in 1923 and retired in 1930.
