An Italian buffo bass, born in Savona, who read classics at the University of Genoa before training as a singer with Franca Mattiucci, Paolo Montarsolo and Renata Scotto. He won the AsLiCo and Verdi competitions and became a regular at La Scala. His career has been built on character roles, most often the sacristan in Tosca, which he recorded for Decca under Zubin Mehta and sang at the Salzburg Festival in 2018 under Christian Thielemann, and Benoît and Alcindoro in La bohème. His comic roles include Dulcamara, Don Bartolo and Don Magnifico. He founded the Noli Musica Festival.
