Claudia Muzio

An Italian soprano, one of the most admired of her generation and known in South America as la divina Claudia. Born Claudina Muzzio to a stage director and a chorus singer, she grew up partly in London and studied with Annetta Casaloni, who had created Verdi's Maddalena. She made her debut at Arezzo in 1910 and reached La Scala in 1913 as Desdemona. At the Metropolitan Opera from 1916 she created Giorgetta in Il tabarro, and she sang at Buenos Aires and Chicago through the 1920s. She died at Rome at forty-seven.
