Jean Morère

Jean Morère was born at Couladère in Haute-Garonne, studied in Toulouse and then at the Paris Conservatoire under Paul Läget, and took one of the three first prizes in singing on graduating in 1861. He made his debut at the Opéra that year in Il trovatore, and sang at Marseille and at La Monnaie in Brussels, where his roles included Vasco da Gama in L'Africaine and the title part of Robert le diable. He created Don Carlos at the Opéra on 11 March 1867. He left the stage in 1871 after a mental breakdown, and died at Toulouse sixteen years later.
