Nelly Miricioiu
Birthplace: Adjud, Romania
A Romanian soprano, settled in Britain, known for bel canto and for reviving neglected operas. She trained in Romania and made her debut at Iaşi as the Queen of Night, singing at Braşov until she left the country in 1981. Scottish Opera, Covent Garden from 1982, La Scala and the Metropolitan Opera followed. From the 1990s she worked extensively with Opera Rara on rarely heard nineteenth-century Italian and French works. In 1994 at Turin she sang Magda in the first performance of Puccini's third version of La rondine, finished in 1921 and unheard for seventy-three years.
