Sophie Löwe
also Sofia Loewe, Sophie Loewe
Birthplace: Oldenburg, Duchy of Oldenburg
Sophie Löwe was a German soprano who created Elvira in Verdi's Ernani at La Fenice in 1844 and Odabella in Attila there in 1846. The daughter of the actor Ferdinand Löwe, she studied in Vienna and Milan, and sang at the Kärntnertortheater in Vienna from 1832. After an engagement at the Berlin Court Opera and a London season in 1841, she created the title role of Donizetti's Maria Padilla at La Scala. She clashed with Verdi over Ernani, yet he wrote Odabella for her and praised her in it. In 1848 she married Prince Friedrich Adalbert of Liechtenstein and retired.
