Jenny Lind
also Johanna Maria Lind, Jenny Lind-Goldschmidt
Birthplace: Stockholm, Sweden
Jenny Lind, called the Swedish nightingale, was a soprano who trained in Stockholm and made her debut there in 1838 as Agathe in Der Freischütz. When overwork damaged her voice she went to Manuel García in Paris, who rested it and rebuilt her technique. Her London debut at Her Majesty's Theatre in 1847 was a triumph, and there she created Amalia in Verdi's I masnadieri, but she gave up the stage in 1849. She toured America under P. T. Barnum, married the pianist Otto Goldschmidt, and taught singing at the Royal College of Music.
