Theodor Lay

Theodor Lay was a German baritone who spent over three decades in the Vienna Court Opera ensemble, appearing in more than 1,700 recorded performances across 135 roles in 57 operas. He worked as a child actor and chorister before principal baritone posts in Altona, Timișoara, Olomouc, Brno and Hamburg, then Vienna from 1857. He created the Dancaïre in the house's 1875 Carmen, a role he sang 66 times, and ranged from Beckmesser in Die Meistersinger to the Steersman in Der fliegende Holländer. He was also an enthusiastic amateur watchmaker.
