Berthe Lamare

A French soprano of the Opéra-Comique. Born in Paris, the daughter of the painter Alphonse-Eugène Lamare, she took three first prizes at the Conservatoire in 1906 and that September made her debut at the Opéra-Comique as Charlotte in Werther, a role she sang there some sixty times. She created Suzuki in the first Paris Madama Butterfly that December, the title role of Marcel Bertrand's Ghyslaine in 1908 and Nedda in the house's first Paillasse in 1910, and sang Louise, Mignon, Santuzza and Butterfly herself. She sang Tosca and Butterfly in Tunis in 1912 and Butterfly again in Cairo in 1913.
