Luigi Lablache was an Italian bass, the most famous of his generation, with a voice of uncommon depth and power and a gift for comedy. Born in Naples to a French father and an Irish mother, he studied at the conservatory there and made his debut in 1812. After seasons at La Scala and the San Carlo he sang in London almost every season from 1830 to 1852, and in Paris he created Giorgio in I puritani and Don Pasquale. He created Massimiliano in Verdi's I masnadieri in London in 1847, and taught singing to the young Princess Victoria.
