Franz Klarwein

Franz Klarwein was a German tenor who studied in Frankfurt and Berlin, joining the Grosse Volksoper there as a lyric tenor in 1937. After moving to the Bavarian State Opera in Munich, he created the Italian Tenor in Capriccio in 1942, sang the title role in Sutermeister's Raskolnikoff in 1949, took part in the premiere of Hindemith's Die Harmonie der Welt in 1957, and created Timoleon in Cikker's Hra o láske a smrti ('The Play of Love and Death') in 1969. Over 35 years with the Munich company he sang a wide variety of character roles, including Count Elemer in Arabella on tour at Covent Garden in 1953; his final appearance, in 1977, was as an Officer in Ariadne auf Naxos.
