Hermine Kittel

Hermine Kittel was an Austrian contralto who began her career as an actress before studying singing with Amalie Materna in Vienna. At the Vienna State Opera she sang at first under Mahler's direction, and later created a Dryad in the premiere of the revised Ariadne auf Naxos in 1916. At the Bayreuth Festival, in 1902 and 1908, she sang Erda and various minor roles, and at the early Salzburg Festivals she was often heard as Marcellina in Le nozze di Figaro. She was married to the singer Alexander Haydter, and her brother Karl Kittel was a conductor.
