Helene Jung

Helene Jung was a German contralto who trained in Dresden with Karl Scheidemantel and made her stage debut at Hamburg in 1916. She became the Dresden State Opera's leading contralto from 1920 to 1941, creating three Strauss roles there: the Omniscient Mussel in Die ägyptische Helena (1928), the Housekeeper in Die schweigsame Frau (1935) and Gaea in Daphne (1938), alongside guest engagements at major German houses, in Vienna and in London. She taught in Weimar from 1941 to 1963, after which she lived in retirement at Gosheim, Württemberg.
