François-Marcel Junca

François-Marcel Junca was a French bass with a fine, dark voice and a powerful stage presence. He studied in Toulon and Paris and made his debut at Metz in 1839, and at the Théâtre-Lyrique in Paris sang in a run of premieres in the early 1850s, among them Adam's Si j'étais roi. In 1859 he was Procida in the American premiere of Les vêpres siciliennes in New York. In Italy he created the title role of Boito's Mefistofele at La Scala in 1868, and the next year Padre Guardiano in the revised La forza del destino. He retired in 1877.
