Gustave Huberdeau

A French bass-baritone who sang at the Opéra-Comique, in Chicago, and later in films. He trained at the Paris Conservatoire and spent his early years in secondary roles at the Opéra-Comique, creating Gondebaud in Massenet's Grisélidis in 1901 and Lo zio Bonzo in the first Paris Madama Butterfly in 1906. He joined the Manhattan Opera company in 1909, sang Orestes in the first American Elektra, then spent seven years with the Chicago Opera. He created Rambaldo in La rondine at Monte Carlo in 1917, and sang Méphistophélès and Arkel at Covent Garden.
