Georg Hann

Georg Hann was an Austrian bass who studied with Theodor Lierhammer in Vienna and joined the Bavarian State Opera in Munich in 1927, remaining there until his death. His range stretched from the deep bass of Sarastro to dramatic baritone roles such as Scarpia and Tonio. He created the Cavalry Sergeant in Friedenstag in 1938 and La Roche in Capriccio in 1942. He appeared at the Salzburg Festival in 1931, 1946 and 1947 and as a guest artist in Vienna and Berlin, and sang in Salome at Covent Garden in 1924, returning there in 1947 with the Vienna State Opera as Leporello and Pizarro. His wartime broadcast recordings are prized for their vivid characterization, among them his Daland in Der fliegende Holländer.
