Dinh Gilly
Birthplace: Algiers, French Algeria
A French baritone whose career was broken by the First World War. He studied at Toulouse and in Rome with Antonio Cotogni, took a premier prix at the Paris Conservatoire in 1902 and made his Opéra debut that December as Silvio. He was at the Metropolitan Opera from 1909 to 1914, creating Sonora in La fanciulla del West, and sang at Covent Garden from 1911. He lived with the soprano Emmy Destinn and was in Bohemia when war broke out; interned in Austria, he was still held in 1917. He taught in London from 1925, John Brownlee among his pupils.
