Antonio Ghislanzoni
Birthplace: Lecco, Kingdom of Lombardy–Venetia
Antonio Ghislanzoni sang as a baritone before he wrote for singers, a career of eight years from 1846 that reached Carlo in Ernani in Paris. He gave it up for the pen, editing the Gazzetta musicale di Milano for Ricordi and writing novels, verse and memoirs alongside dozens of libretti. Verdi used him three times: to rework La forza del destino for its Milan revision of 1869, to versify the Italian Aida from Camille du Locle's French prose, and to supply verses for the Philip and Posa scene added to Don Carlos in 1872. Aida is the one that lasted.
