Marietta Gazzaniga
also Marietta Gazzaniga-Malaspina
Birthplace: Voghera, Kingdom of Sardinia
Marietta Gazzaniga was an Italian soprano who created two Verdi heroines in successive years: Luisa in Luisa Miller at the San Carlo in Naples in 1849, and Lina in Stiffelio at Trieste in 1850. She studied in Milan with Alberto Mazzucato, made her debut in her native Voghera in the early 1840s and first sang at La Scala in 1851. From 1857 she toured North and Central America for more than a decade; her husband, Count Malaspina, died of smallpox on the voyage to Havana. Late in her career she turned to mezzo-soprano roles, among them Azucena.
