Edoardo Garbin

1865–1943 · Italian · tenor

Birthplace: Padua, Kingdom of Lombardy–Venetia

Edoardo Garbin was an Italian tenor who created Fenton in Verdi's Falstaff at La Scala in 1893, and married the Nannetta of that premiere, Adelina Stehle, with whom he sang for many years, chiefly in Puccini. He studied in Milan with Alberto Selva and Vittorio Orefice and made his debut at Vicenza in 1891 in La forza del destino. He also created roles in Franchetti's Cristoforo Colombo and Leoncavallo's Zazà, and sang at La Scala until 1918, though London received him coolly in 1908. He died the last surviving man to have created a role under Verdi.
