Hermann Gallos

Hermann Gallos was an Austrian buffo tenor who studied law in Vienna before turning to singing at the Vienna Conservatory, and was discovered on a tour of the Vienna Academic Choral Society. He made his stage debut at the Vienna Court Opera in 1915 and remained there for the rest of his career, through its transition to the State Opera, also appearing at the Salzburg Festival from 1922 to 1950. He created Scaramuccio in the premiere of the revised Ariadne auf Naxos in 1916, a role he went on to sing 112 times, and his other roles included Pedrillo in Die Entführung aus dem Serail, Jaquino in Fidelio, Augustin Moser in Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg and Valzacchi in Der Rosenkavalier. From 1937 he also taught at the Vienna Music Academy, whose students included the baritone Hans Braun and the bass-baritone Walter Berry.
