Lucien Fugère

A French baritone who sang more than a hundred roles at the Opéra-Comique over three decades. Apprenticed to a stonemason as a boy, he began in Parisian cafés-concerts in 1870, moved to operetta at the Bouffes-Parisiens and joined the Opéra-Comique in 1877. There he created Schaunard in the first Paris La bohème, Pandolfe in Massenet's Cendrillon, the Father in Charpentier's Louise and the Devil in Grisélidis, and was celebrated in Mozart as Papageno, Figaro and Leporello. In 1910 he sang Sancho in the Paris premiere of Massenet's Don Quichotte. At the age of 85 he was still singing Rossini's Bartolo.
