Ludwig Ermold

Ludwig Ermold was a German baritone who began his career as a bass-buffo singer in 1909, appearing in Zurich, at Dresden's Court Opera, in The Hague, Amsterdam and Riga. Appointed a Saxon Kammersänger in Dresden, he created the Notary in the premiere of Strauss's Der Rosenkavalier in 1911, the Commercial Counsellor, one of Robert Storch's skat partners, in Intermezzo in 1924, and Farfallo in Die schweigsame Frau in 1935. He also sang in the world premiere of Arabella (1933), again at Dresden, though that role is not recorded. He returned to the stage after the Second World War, appearing in an operetta at a temporary Dresden theatre on 14 July 1945, and a street in the city's Südvorstadt district is named for him.
