Mary Ellis

An American soprano and actress whose career on the stage lasted more than seventy years. She made her debut at the Metropolitan Opera on the night of the Trittico premiere in 1918, creating Suor Genovieffa, and later sang Lauretta, Giannetta to Caruso's Nemorino and Fyodor to Chaliapin's Boris. She then moved to Broadway, where the title role of Friml's Rose-Marie made her famous in 1924. From 1930 she worked in England, in Kern's Music in the Air and three of Ivor Novello's musicals, beginning with Glamorous Night, and in plays by Coward and Rattigan.
