Andrés de Segurola
Birthplace: Valencia, Spain
A Spanish bass, a Metropolitan Opera character singer for some twenty years and later a Hollywood voice coach. He studied in Barcelona and made his debut there in 1898, appearing in France and at La Scala before settling in New York, where Alvise, Colline, Varlaam and Geronte were among his parts. He created Jake Wallace in La fanciulla del West, Ser Amantio di Nicolao in Gianni Schicchi and Didier in Victor Herbert's Madeleine. After retiring he taught in Hollywood, where Deanna Durbin was among his pupils, and appeared in films.
