Giuseppe De Luca

An Italian baritone whose career at the Metropolitan Opera ran for twenty consecutive seasons. He studied in Rome with Venceslao Persichini and made his debut at Piacenza in 1897 as Valentin, going on to sing the leading baritone in the first Adriana Lecouvreur and, at La Scala, to create Sharpless in Madama Butterfly. He joined the Metropolitan Opera in 1915 and created the title role of Gianni Schicchi there in 1918. He returned to Covent Garden in 1935 after a quarter of a century away, and made his Met farewell in 1940 as Rigoletto.
