Roberto De Candia
Birthplace: Molfetta, Italy
An Italian baritone known above all in comic and bel canto roles, Rossini and Donizetti especially. Born in Molfetta, he trained first as a cellist, then studied singing with Sesto Bruscantini, and in 1990 won the Adriano Belli competition at Spoleto and made his debut. He created Rambaldo in the third version of La rondine at Turin in 1994, and went on to La Scala, where he first sang in Gluck's Armide, Glyndebourne, where he was Lescaut in Manon Lescaut in 1997, and the Metropolitan Opera. His roles include Falstaff, Gianni Schicchi, Dulcamara, Figaro and Don Pasquale.
