Charlotte Dahmen

Charlotte Dahmen was a German mezzo-soprano who later moved into soprano roles. She made her London debut at Covent Garden in 1912 as Fricka and Magdalene, sang at the Munich Court Opera from 1913, and joined the Vienna Court Opera in 1916, the year she created the Naiad in the premiere of the revised Ariadne auf Naxos; she remained in Vienna until 1921. Her repertoire widened to include Carmen, Octavian, Elsa, Salome and Chrysothemis in Elektra, and she also created the title role in Alfano's Sakuntala and appeared in the 1923 Barcelona premiere of Pahissa's Marianella. She married the Spanish bass-baritone Eladio de Chao in 1916, and from 1925 the couple taught together at the Cologne Conservatory, later training singers in Madrid.
