Marguerite Carré

A French soprano who created roles in fifteen works at the Opéra-Comique. Born Marthe Giraud, she was the daughter of a baritone who ran the Graslin theatre at Nantes, where she made her debut in 1899 as Mimì. She reached Paris in 1902 and married Albert Carré, the director of the Opéra-Comique. She was the first French Cio-Cio-San in 1906 and the first Salud in Falla's La vida breve, and was much admired as Manon, Louise and Mélisande. She sang in Paris until 1923.
